Section E: RESEARCH ACTIVITY INITIATION

When I joined IISc, research on database systems and real-time systems was non-existent at our center and I therefore had to start from scratch the research activities in these areas. These initial efforts were given a focus after I set up the Database Systems Lab in 1995 to serve as a dedicated facility for database and real-time system research and development - I have been the Convenor of the lab since that time. The lab currently has close to twenty workstations, primarily comprised of high-end Sun Ultra 24 and Ultra 20 platforms; the Illustra, DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Shore and Exodus database software packages; numerous books, journals, conference proceedings and manuals; discussion, presentation and copier facilities; and is networked, airconditioned, and open round the clock. These facilities have, for the most part, been acquired using funding from projects sponsored by government agencies and multinational companies.
